English
To Wai-tat is a Hong Kong film director active in the 1990s. His signature work is the action film 古惑奇兵之兵行險著, released in July 1996 and starring Yu Rongguang, Ji Tiansheng, Chan Siu-ha, Chow Bei-lei, Ho Ka-kui and Shing Fui-on, written by Chang Li-ling and Law Chi and running about ninety minutes; a story of a martial-arts youth drawn into triad feuds, it is typical of the gangland action genre then in vogue and was mounted as a low-budget production. The 1990s were a period in which Hong Kong cinema adjusted after its peak of output; competition was fierce and the industry was finely divided, with many film-makers supporting productions in hands-on roles such as executive or assistant director, and To belongs to this group of quietly working professionals within the system. His surviving directorial output is small and largely confined to genre pictures, and it has drawn limited attention in mainstream film history or at major awards, yet it remains part of the production chain of 1990s Hong Kong genre cinema. In the absence of more detailed official or industry records, little is publicly documented about his life — his birth year, how he entered the industry, and his complete filmography all remain to be established, apart from the work noted here.
