Shum Wai (1948 – 9 June 2022), born Shum Tat-wai, was a Hong Kong actor and director. In the 1970s he entered the film industry as a new actor at the Cathay studio, appearing in early films such as Song of the Wanderer (1971), but found the treatment and pay discouraging and switched to stunt work and diving. From 1975 he was a clerk in Cathay's publicity department, and from 1980 he worked as a legal executive. He returned to films in 1984, acting while still working at a law firm and taking unpaid leave in 1986 to concentrate on shooting. In 1984 he appeared in Johnny Mak's crime film Long Arm of the Law as the double-dealing informer Ah Tai, a performance that won him Best Supporting Actor at the 4th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1985 and made his name; during the shoot the director had him tied to a petrol-soaked car and set alight, and his genuine panic was captured on camera, becoming one of the film's highlights but also causing a quarrel with Mak. He went on to play supporting and villainous roles, gaining a reputation as a screen villain, in films such as Mr. Vampire (1985), Yes, Madam (1985), Dragons Forever (1988) and Miracles (1989), and worked as producer, screenwriter under the pen name Fok King-yiu and action director, directing films such as a remake of The Dragon and the Tiger, with seven assistant-directing and directing credits in all. He was a Buddhist; his former wife Chan Wai-ling was a businesswoman, and he had a daughter, Shum Ying-yu (born 8 June 1989), and was the godfather of the daughter of his long-time friend, actor Wong Lung-wai. From 1994 to 1998 he acted in more than a dozen TVB serials, including File of Justice III and State of Divinity; he retired from the screen to Beijing in 2002 and briefly returned to acting in mainland dramas in 2017. In April 2019 he was hospitalised with pneumonia and respiratory failure in the intensive care unit of Beijing Luhe Hospital. He died at Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei on 9 June 2022, aged 74.
