Sammo Hung was born in Hong Kong on 7 January 1952, his family from Ningbo, Zhejiang; his grandfather Hung Chung-ho was an early film director. As a boy he trained in Peking opera and northern-style martial arts at Yu Jim-yuen's China Drama Academy, becoming the eldest of the 'Seven Little Fortunes' alongside Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah and Corey Yuen, and he appeared as a child actor under the name Chu Yuen-lung in Education for Love (1961). In the 1960s he joined Shaw Brothers and worked as a stuntman and double on films such as King Hu's Come Drink with Me, and he also appeared in Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon. He directed his first feature, The Iron-Fisted Monk, in 1977, blending kung fu with comedy, and his Encounters of the Spooky Kind (1980) ignited a craze for supernatural kung-fu comedy. In 1983 he won Best Actor at the 2nd Hong Kong Film Awards for Carry on Pickpocket and Best Action Choreography for The Prodigal Son, and his Winners and Sinners began the hit Lucky Stars series that set the all-star New Year formula. He produced Mr. Vampire in 1985, igniting a jiangshi film boom. He took Best Actor again in 1989 for Painted Faces, in which he played his own opera master Yu Jim-yuen, and he directed hits such as Millionaires' Express (1986) and Dragons Forever (1988). In 1998 he starred in the American television series Martial Law, one of the few Hong Kong action actors to headline a mainstream US show. Further Best Action Choreography wins came with Ip Man (2009), Ip Man 2 (2011) and Paradox (2018), and he choreographed Stephen Chow's Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013). He received a lifetime achievement award from the Asian Film Awards in 2023 and the Hong Kong Film Awards' lifetime achievement honour in April 2024, and the same year appeared in Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. He has long been married to the former Miss Hong Kong Joyce Godenzi, and his sons from an earlier marriage, Timmy Hung, Sammy Hung and Chin-Hung Hung, also work in entertainment. His Hung Ga Ban trained many stunt performers and action directors, and his choreography prizes realism and rhythm, leaving a deep mark on Hong Kong action cinema. In the early 1980s he set up his own production companies and, working with Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao, made hits such as Project A (1983), Wheels on Meals (1984) and My Lucky Stars (1985). His Hung Ga Ban trained many stunt performers and action directors, among them Lam Ching-ying, Yuen Wah, Corey Yuen and Chin Kar-lok.
