Poon Man-kit (1956 - 9 September 2025) was a Hong Kong film director and screenwriter. He entered the industry as an assistant at Rediffusion Television and moved into film in 1982. In 1991, on the recommendation of Stephen Shiu and Johnny Mak, he directed the gangster biopic To Be Number One, produced by Johnny Mak and written by Stephen Shiu and starring Ray Lui, Cecilia Yip and Kent Cheng; based on the life of the 1960s-70s drug lord 'Crippled Ho' (Ng Sik-ho), it drew attention for Ray Lui putting on forty pounds for the role, took more than HK$38 million at the box office to rank third for the year, and won Best Film and Best Screenplay at the 11th Hong Kong Film Awards, sparking a wave of 'tycoon' pictures. Running well over two hours, it was unusually long for a Hong Kong film of the day and gave Ray Lui's career a fresh lift. He went on to direct Lord of East China Sea and its sequel (1993) and the 1996 film Shanghai Grand. He also worked in television, including The Duke of Mount Deer and Kung Fu Soccer. Known for his handling of gangster and tycoon subjects, Poon was one of the leading directors of that 1990s cycle. He died in Beijing on 9 September 2025, aged 69.
