English
Tien Feng (4 June 1928 – 2015), born Tian Yukun in Zhengzhou, Henan, was a celebrated Hong Kong character actor and occasional director. From the 1960s he performed for Shaw Brothers, appearing in a great many Mandarin-language pictures and becoming known for forceful villains and imposing elder figures. His roles ranged widely — martial-arts, literary and contemporary films alike — and he often worked alongside the leading stars of the day, an indispensable part of the Shaw Brothers studio system. His range was wide: he could play villains and gangland figures as readily as kindly fathers and elders, working across film and television for more than four decades and still appearing in television dramas such as Justice Pao in the 1990s. In June 1971 his self-directed, self-starring martial-arts film The Golden Seal (金印仇) was released, co-starring Wang Ping, Chung Wa and Ku Feng with Leung Siu-chung as action director; Tien not only directed but also wrote the lyrics for its theme song, making it a showcase for his talents. His work spanned the Shaw Brothers, Hong Kong and Taiwanese production systems, witnessing the whole arc of Mandarin cinema from its peak to its decline and on to Hong Kong-Taiwan co-operation. Tien died in 2015.
