English
Mark Wu Yiu-fai is a Hong Kong film director, screenwriter and actor, born in Hong Kong on 17 September 1970 and a graduate of the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University. From 1998 he worked in creative roles at Metro Radio before moving into film. In 2011 he co-wrote the topical film Lan Kwai Fong, set in the nightlife of Lan Kwai Fong and a talking point that year, and also worked as writer and actor on 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, a controversial erotic film for which he wrote the script. In 2012 he wrote, directed and starred in Due West, made by China 3D Digital Entertainment and released in Hong Kong on 20 September, starring Justin Cheung and Gregory Wong and adapted from an online novel, dealing with the desires and relationships of young Hongkongers; it sparked discussion among younger audiences and greatly raised his profile, and was followed by a sequel. He went on to direct further films in the urban, erotic and comedy genres. Wu's work has gradually built a line centred on urban erotic subjects, moving nimbly between comedy and erotic genres with a certain commercial pull, making him one of the writer-directors active in Hong Kong cinema since the 2000s; his route into the industry and early years are thinly recorded.
