Raymond Yip Wai-man is a Hong Kong film director, screenwriter and producer, born in Hong Kong on 11 April 1966. One of the earliest Hong Kong directors to move north to make films on the mainland, he witnessed and took part in the integration of Hong Kong and mainland cinema and was among the first to adapt to the mainland co-production system. He directed films including My Dream Girl (2003) and Bruce Lee, My Brother (2010), spanning comedy, romance and biography. In 2010 he directed the road comedy Lost on Journey, starring Xu Zheng and Wang Baoqiang and built around a run of mishaps on a journey home for Chinese New Year; it won critical and box-office success on the mainland, is seen as the founding work of the 'Lost on Journey' series of road comedies, and earned him Best Director at the first Hubei Film Week. In 2014 he directed the horror film The House That Never Dies, built on a Republican-era haunted-house legend and recording solid box office on the mainland, and in 2016 Phantom of the Theatre. In 2018 he directed Iceman: The Time Traveller and served as chief director of the mystery web series Original Sin, starring Zhai Tianlin and Yin Zheng. He also worked on co-productions such as Cook Up a Storm. Yip works across comedy, horror and action, largely for the mainland market, and is a representative figure of Hong Kong directors who moved north.
