Yuen Ho-chuen, whose ancestral home is Dongguan in Guangdong, was born in Hong Kong and worked across television and film as a director, screenwriter and producer from the 1970s to the 1990s. As a student he took part in stage drama, at one point in the same troupe as Chung King-fai, and in the same period performed in radio drama at Rediffusion while also hosting and working behind the scenes at Rediffusion Television. In 1973 he joined Rediffusion Television full time as a drama director, handling series such as The Big Man, Big Deal, Three Brothers, Ten Great Swindles and The Big Sister and the Mad Demon; the future producer Wong Sum-wai served as his assistant director, and he also directed socially realist dramas set among ordinary people. In 1978 he left the station, signed with Shaw Brothers that November and directed his first feature, Whirlpool. At Shaw he made the comedy kung-fu film The Stick Snatcher (1980) and the period martial-arts picture What Price Honesty? (1981); the latter, written by Ni Kuang and starring Pai Piao, Danny Lee and Sun Chien, tells of three constables defying a corrupt officialdom, with action staged by the Yuen clan, and has come to be seen by fans as an overlooked gem. From February 1982 he was Shaw's quality-control and production manager, overseeing the shooting schedules and quality of several films in production at once, until he left in 1985, having also directed Crazy Games that year. He then production-managed for Johnny Mak's company, helping coordinate the Long Arm of the Law series. From 1986 to 1989 he returned to Asia Television as a drama producer, working on the early run of The 13 Emperors of Qing, and in 1987 directed the series Devil Star. His career spans television drama, contemporary and martial-arts films, combining writing and directing with production management.
