English

Yuen Cheung-yan came from a martial arts family: he was a son of the choreographer Yuen Siu-tien and younger brother of Yuen Woo-ping, and with brothers including Yuen Shun-yi, Yuen Yat-choh, Yuen Jan-wai and Yuen Lung-kui he trained in martial arts under his father from childhood. He began as a stunt double and from the late 1960s was credited as an assistant action director, working on The Flying Dragon Blade in 1968 and, under senior brother Tong Kai, on Chang Cheh pictures such as The Bodyguard, Vengeance and The Wandering Swordsman. By the mid-1970s he was an established choreographer at Shaw Brothers, appearing in The Magic Blade (1976) and collaborating with Chor Yuen and Ho Meng-hua on films including Hong Kong Criminal Case. In the late 1970s he and his brothers formed the Yuen Clan to support Yuen Woo-ping, contributing to Peace Film Company's output, among them The Fearless Hyena, The Buddhist Fist, The Miracle Fighters and Legend of a Fighter (1982), building the clan's reputation. In 1991 he was martial arts director on Once Upon a Time in China, sharing the 11th Hong Kong Film Awards' best action choreography prize with Yuen Shun-yi and Lau Kar-wing. An enthusiastic cameo performer, he is remembered as Hung Yat-hing, who teaches the dream-fist technique in King of Beggars (1992), and as the beggar selling a legendary martial arts manual to a child in Stephen Chow's Kung Fu (2004), whose line about the boy's rare martial gift became a pop-culture catchphrase. He was also action director on the Hollywood film Daredevil, taking Hong Kong's fight-design craft to foreign productions, and took part in the action design of more than a hundred film and television works over his career. He often appeared in drag as old women, being among the Yuen Clan members most often seen on screen. He died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong on 1 January 2026, with his funeral held at the Universal Funeral Parlour on 1 February that year and tributes paid publicly by figures such as Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen.
