許冠文1942年出世，香港大學社會學系畢業，做過教師同廣告工作，七十年代同細佬許冠傑喺電視台主持《雙星報喜》嶄露頭角。1974年執導《鬼馬雙星》，創下當時香港開埠以來最高票房紀錄，開創以小市民辛酸入戲嘅「許氏喜劇」；《半斤八兩》(1976)《賣身契》(1978) 接連成為票房冠軍。1982年憑《摩登保鏢》成為首屆香港電影金像獎影帝。佢嘅喜劇諷刺精明勢利同打工仔掙扎，為周星馳之前嘅港產喜劇定調，許氏四傑（文、武、英、傑）更係香港娛樂史上最著名嘅家族組合。

Michael Hui, born in 1942, graduated in sociology from the University of Hong Kong and worked as a teacher and in advertising before co-hosting the 1970s TVB variety show Hui's Double Stars with brother Sam. His directorial debut Games Gamblers Play (1974) set Hong Kong's all-time box-office record, launching the 'Hui Brothers' comedy of ordinary people's struggles; The Private Eyes (1976) and The Contract (1978) followed as successive box-office champions, and Security Unlimited won him Best Actor at the first Hong Kong Film Awards in 1982. His satire of greed and drudgery defined Hong Kong comedy before Stephen Chow, and the four Hui brothers remain the city's most famous entertainment family.
