許冠文（1942年9月3日—），廣東番禺潭山村人，生於廣州。1950年，八歲嘅佢隨家人南來香港，一家一度住喺木屋區。他曾就讀佛教志蓮小學同喇沙書院，其後入讀柏立基師範學院，再於香港中文大學聯合書院修讀社會科學，1969年取得社會科學（榮譽）學士。讀大學前後，佢曾任中學教師，亦做過廣告創作，呢段經歷令佢日後寫喜劇對白分外貼地。1968年，仍在讀大學嘅許冠文加入無綫電視，主持《星辰盃校際常識問答比賽》同《歡樂今宵》等節目；1971年，佢同弟弟許冠傑拍檔，主持綜合節目《雙星報喜》，以冷面幽默嘅處境笑料贏盡口碑，因而有「冷面笑匠」之譽。1972年，佢獲李翰祥邀請主演《大軍閥》，其後再演出李翰祥嘅《一樂也》（1973）同《醜聞》（1974）等喜劇。1974年，許冠文同許冠傑等創辦許氏兄弟影片公司，創業作就係佢自編自導自演嘅《鬼馬雙星》，寫打工仔賭博求翻身嘅故事，以六百萬元票房打破香港開埠以嚟嘅中西片紀錄，開創貼近小市民生活嘅「許氏喜劇」。許氏三兄弟許冠文、許冠傑、許冠英往後連年合作，許冠傑又主唱電影主題曲同插曲，帶動咗粵語流行曲嘅興起。其後《天才與白痴》（1975）、《半斤八兩》（1976年12月上映）、《賣身契》（1978）、《摩登保鑣》（1981）連年成為賣座冠軍：《半斤八兩》以私家偵探社為背景，諷刺老闆剝削夥計，同名前主題曲傳唱一時；《賣身契》挖苦藝人被迫簽下不平等條款；《摩登保鑣》寫保安員嘅市井辛酸，票房高達一千八百萬元。呢批作品令「打工仔喜劇」成為港產片嘅一大類型，戲中嘅苦中作樂同對老闆、對勢利嘅嘲諷，引起普羅市民共鳴。1982年，首屆香港電影金像獎把最佳男主角頒給《摩登保鑣》嘅許冠文。1984年，佢自導自演《鐵板燒》；1988年嘅《雞同鴨講》由高志森執導，係佢首次投資拍片。1992年，佢自編自導自演《神算》，票房達三千六百多萬元。2016年，佢主演台灣導演鍾孟宏嘅《一路順風》，入圍第53屆金馬獎最佳男主角。2022年，許冠文獲第40屆香港電影金像獎頒發終身成就獎；2023年，佢憑《風再起時》獲第41屆金像獎最佳男配角。許冠文嘅喜劇以諷刺勢利、打工辛酸見稱，佢係香港演藝人協會創會會長，許氏四兄弟（文、武、英、傑）亦係香港演藝史上著名嘅家族組合。佢縱橫影壇逾半個世紀，由電視主持走到喜劇宗師，見證咗香港電影由戰後起步到全盛嘅歲月。佢嘅喜劇着重處境同對白，少用誇張嘅形體動作，自成一格。

Michael Hui Koon-man (born 3 September 1942) is a Hong Kong actor, director, screenwriter and producer known as the deadpan comedian. Of Panyu, Guangdong ancestry and born in Guangzhou, he moved to Hong Kong with his family at the age of eight in 1950 and grew up in a squatter area. He attended a Buddhist primary school and La Salle College, then trained at the Sir Robert Black College of Education and studied social science at United College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, graduating in 1969. He taught briefly at secondary level and worked in advertising, an experience that later sharpened his ear for everyday dialogue. In 1968, still an undergraduate, he joined Television Broadcasts as the host of quiz and variety programmes; in 1971 he teamed up with his younger brother Sam for the variety show Hui's Double Stars, whose deadpan situational gags won him wide acclaim. He made his film breakthrough in 1972 in Li Han-hsiang's The Great Warlord, followed by Li's comedies of 1973 and 1974. In 1974 he wrote, directed and starred in Games Gamblers Play, a story of working men gambling for a way out; it took HK$6 million, broke Hong Kong's box-office record for both Chinese and Western films, and launched the comedy of ordinary life associated with the Hui brothers. The Last Message (1975), The Private Eyes (1976), The Contract (1978) and Security Unlimited (1981) were successive box-office champions: The Private Eyes satirised an exploitative boss, The Contract mocked unfair artiste contracts, and Security Unlimited, a comedy of working-class security guards, grossed about HK$18 million. Security Unlimited won Hui Best Actor at the first Hong Kong Film Awards in 1982. He directed and starred in Teppanyaki (1984); Chicken & Duck Talk (1988) was directed by Clifton Ko and was his first investment as a producer. In 1992 he wrote, directed and starred in The Magic Touch, which took over HK$36 million. In 2016 he starred in Chung Mong-hong's Godspeed and was nominated for Best Actor at the 53rd Golden Horse Awards. In 2022 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards, and in 2023 he won Best Supporting Actor at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards for Where the Wind Blows. His comedy satirises snobbery and the drudgery of work, and he is a founding president of the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild. The four Hui brothers remain Hong Kong's best-known entertainment family.
