Yan Yan Mak (also credited as Gorretti Mak) is a Hong Kong director of film, television and advertising, born in Hong Kong with ancestral roots in Foshan, Guangdong. As early as 1993, while still a student, she entered the film industry, working as a continuity girl, assistant director, production manager, art director and wardrobe designer, so that she came to know the production process from the ground up before graduating from the film and television school of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Her graduation short Snapshots won a distinction at the International Short Film and Video Awards of Hong Kong, revealing an early sensitivity to visual language.
In 2001 she completed her first feature, GeGe (Brother), which won the FIPRESCI prize at the 25th Hong Kong International Film Festival and the best director award (POVEGLIA Award) in the Critics' Week of the Venice Film Festival; the film was also selected for the 2002 Rotterdam International Film Festival, took the Woosuk Award for best Asian new director at the Jeonju International Film Festival in South Korea, and won a humanitarian award at the Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland.
In 2004 she wrote and directed her second feature, Butterfly, starring Josie Ho, Tian Yuan and Eric Kot, the story of a married schoolteacher who meets a young woman and is forced to confront her own long-suppressed desire. The film was chosen as the opening film of the Critics' Week at the Venice Film Festival; Tian Yuan won best new performer at the 2005 Hong Kong Film Awards and was nominated in the same category at the 41st Golden Horse Awards, where Mak was also nominated for best adapted screenplay. The film established her as one of the few Hong Kong directors widely noticed for portraying queer subject matter through a woman's perspective.
She went on to direct A Story in August (2006), the documentary The Decameron (2008, made in collaboration with Denise Ho) about people living on the margins of the city, and Merry-Go-Round (2010) co-directed with Clement Cheng and starring Ella Koon, Lawrence Chou, Teddy Robin and Patricia Miu. Besides features, she works actively in television, advertising and music videos, and founded her own production company. Her films repeatedly explore women's lives, family and identity, seeking a balance between commerce and art; her output is small but highly distinctive.
