李兆華1970年代中期加入麗的電視做助理編導，1978年升為編導；《浮生六劫》、《大俠霍元甲》、《變色龍》、《新變色龍》、《四口之家》同《大地恩情》等都係佢呢個時期嘅作品。佢只花四年就由助理編導升到監製，第一部監製作品係《馬永貞》。1983年首次執導電影《瘋血》；1989年轉投無綫電視擔任監製；1992年加入永盛音像企業任監製；1994年開始喺內地監製同執導電視劇。

Lee Siu-wa joined RTV as an assistant director in the mid-1970s and was promoted to director in 1978, working on serials including The Chameleon, Gone with the Wind, Fatherland and The Legend of the Hero Huo Yuanjia — rising from assistant director to producer in just four years, his first production being Ma Yongzhen. He directed his first feature, Mad Blood, in 1983, moved to TVB as a producer in 1989, produced for Wing Shing Video from 1992, and from 1994 worked as producer-director of television drama in mainland China.
