楊紫燁喺香港出世，1977年移民美國，係華人電影工作者。佢曾參與《喜福會》《天浴》《紐約深秋》等片嘅剪接工作，首部執導紀錄片係以1997年香港回歸為主題嘅《風雨故園》。2006年佢執導嘅《潁州的孩子》追蹤安徽阜陽潁州地區受愛滋病影響嘅家庭，獲第79屆奧斯卡最佳紀錄短片獎；另一部《仇崗衛士》於2011年獲奧斯卡最佳紀錄短片獎提名。2015年佢憑《爭氣》奪得第9屆香港電影導演會年度大獎新晉導演獎，並係香港紀錄片拓展計劃嘅創辦人。

Born in Hong Kong and emigrating to the United States in 1977, Ruby Yang is a Chinese film-maker who edited films including The Joy Luck Club, Xiu Xiu and Autumn in New York. Her first documentary as director, shot around Hong Kong's 1997 handover, was her entry to the form. Her 2006 film The Blood of Yingzhou District, following families affected by AIDS in Anhui province, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject; The Warriors of Qiugang was nominated in the same category in 2011. Her 2015 film My Voice, My Life won the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild award for best new director, and she founded the Hong Kong Documentary Initiative.
