On 27 December 1899, Britain issued an Order in Council, stating that the exercise of jurisdiction by Qing officials within Kowloon Walled City would obstruct the military preparations for the defence of Hong Kong, and declaring Kowloon Walled City to be part of the 'Colony of Hong Kong', with Hong Kong legislation applying there.

On 27 December 1970, about 500 prisoners in Tong Fuk Prison on Lantau Island rioted during breakfast due to dissatisfaction with improper violence by prison guards against inmates, damaging cells and taking a prison guard hostage; the police dispatched marine police and riot police to stand by, and senior officials of the Prisons Department also arrived to mediate, and the incident was only quelled after promises of a thorough investigation and improved meals.
