大埔區位於新界東北部，大埔新市鎮沿吐露港西岸發展，周圍是林村、船灣、汀角等郊野與水塘地帶。大埔滘、八仙嶺及船灣郊野公園部分位於區內。

Tai Po lies in the north-east New Territories. The Tai Po new town developed along the west shore of Tolo Harbour, surrounded by countryside and reservoirs at Lam Tsuen, Plover Cove and Ting Kok. Parts of Tai Po Kau, Pat Sin Leng and Plover Cove country parks are in the district.

大埔墟是香港其中一個最古老的墟市，有三百年以上歷史。舊大埔警署（現「綠匯學苑」）建於 1899 年，是香港最早期的警署之一。林村天后廟旁的許願樹是著名民間習俗景點。大埔是第一個實行新市鎮發展的地區之一，於 1970 年代全面發展。

Tai Po Market is among the oldest market towns in Hong Kong, with more than three centuries of history. The Old Tai Po Police Station (now Green Hub) was built in 1899 and is one of the territory’s earliest police stations. The wishing tree beside the Tin Hau temple in Lam Tsuen is a celebrated local custom. Tai Po was among the first areas developed as a new town, from the 1970s.

港鐵東鐵線經大埔墟站及太和站。大埔公路及吐露港公路連接沙田、九龍及新界北。大埔滘碼頭及吐露港有街渡及遊船服務。

The East Rail line serves Tai Po Market and Tai Wo stations. Tai Po Road and Tolo Highway link to Sha Tin, Kowloon and the northern New Territories. Kai-to and pleasure-boat services operate on Tolo Harbour from Tai Po Kau pier.

The Tai Po town centre holds large malls and markets. The industrial estate at Tai Po (now the Tai Po INNOPARK) hosts food, technology and other manufacturers. Lam Tsuen and Plover Cove focus on rural tourism and recreation. Tai Po houses a number of food and technology companies.
