北區位於新界最北端，與深圳接壤，由上水、粉嶺、打鼓嶺、沙頭角、聯和墟及古洞組成。梧桐河及雙魚河經南邊匯流入深圳河。

The North District is the northernmost part of the New Territories, adjoining Shenzhen. It comprises Sheung Shui, Fanling, Ta Kwu Ling, Sha Tau Kok, Luen Wo Hui and Kwu Tung. The rivers Ng Tung and Sheung Yue drain south into the Shenzhen River.

Fanling and Sheung Shui have a rich village heritage; the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail is an official walking trail. Luen Wo Hui in Fanling was a new market town established after the war; the Shek Wu Hui market in Sheung Shui is another traditional market. Lo Wu, Man Kam To and Sha Tau Kok are the district’s main land control points into the mainland.

港鐵東鐵線經上水站及粉嶺站，羅湖站是東鐵線北端總站。落馬洲支線在上水站分岔往落馬洲站。粉嶺公路及上水繞道連接九龍，粉嶺公路是往沙頭角及文錦渡的主要道路。

The East Rail line serves Sheung Shui and Fanling stations; Lo Wu is the northern terminus and the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line branches off at Sheung Shui. Fanling Highway and the Sheung Shui Bypass link to Kowloon; Sha Tau Kok Road and Man Kam To Road lead to the border crossings.

Sheung Shui and Fanling are twin residential and neighbourhood-commercial towns. New growth focuses on the Kwu Tung North new development area as part of the Northern Metropolis. The Sha Tau Kok frontier closed area has gradually opened to tourism. Scattered industrial uses include the Fanling Industrial Park.
