元朗平原自古是魚米之鄉，錦田一帶有超過五百年歷史的鄧氏村落。日治時期元朗墟是新界西北主要墟市。天水圍是 1990 年代發展的新市鎮，人口急增後成為公共房屋集中地。米埔自然保護區是候鳥重要棲息地。

The Yuen Long plain has long been a rice-growing and fishing area. The Tang clan’s walled villages around Kam Tin date back over 500 years. The Yuen Long market town was the main trading centre of the north-west New Territories by the Japanese occupation period. Tin Shui Wai is a new town developed from the 1990s, with a large stock of public housing. Mai Po Nature Reserve is an important wetland for migratory birds.

港鐵屯馬線經元朗站及天水圍站；輕鐵服務天水圍及元朗市。落馬洲支線經新田，元朗公路及新田公路連接九龍及深圳。深圳灣大橋在流浮山以西的深圳灣口岸。

The Tuen Ma Line serves Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai stations; the Light Rail links Tin Shui Wai and Yuen Long town. The Lok Ma Chau Spur Line runs through San Tin. Yuen Long Highway and San Tin Highway connect to Kowloon and Shenzhen; the Shenzhen Bay Bridge lands at the Shenzhen Bay Port west of Lau Fau Shan.
