西貢市是傳統漁港及墟市，早年漁民聚居於此。萬宜水庫於 1978 年建成，是香港最大水塘，水壩以錨形巨石建成。將軍澳於 1980 年代末發展為新市鎮，1990 年代起人口大增。香港地質公園的西貢火山岩園區位於區內。

Sai Kung Town is a traditional fishing port and market town. High Island Reservoir was completed in 1978 as Hong Kong’s largest reservoir, with dolos-anchored dams. Tseung Kwan O became a new town in the late 1980s, with rapid population growth from the 1990s. The Hong Kong Geopark’s Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region is partly in this district.

港鐵將軍澳線經坑口、將軍澳、康城站及調景嶺。將軍澳隧道、寶順路及跨灣連接路（2022 年通車的將藍隧道）連接九龍。西貢市以巴士及小巴往彩虹及將軍澳。

The Tseung Kwan O Line serves Hang Hau, Tseung Kwan O, LOHAS Park and Tiu Keng Leng stations. The Tseung Kwan O Tunnel, Po Shun Road and the Cross Bay Link/Tseung Kwan O–Lam Tin Tunnel (2022) connect to Kowloon. Sai Kung Town is served by buses and minibuses to Choi Hung and Tseung Kwan O.
