西貢市是傳統漁港及墟市，早年漁民聚居於此。萬宜水庫於 1978 年建成，是香港最大水塘，水壩以錨形巨石建成。將軍澳於 1980 年代末發展為新市鎮，1990 年代起人口大增。香港地質公園的西貢火山岩園區位於區內。西貢原為漁港墟市，萬宜水庫1978年建成，為香港最大水塘。上窰村（客家村）、鹽田梓（昔日鹽田）為原居民聚落；大廟灣有「宋代古刻」同佛堂門天后古廟，東龍洲炮台扼守海道，均見證宋代以來海上絲路與軍事防守。

Sai Kung Town is a traditional fishing port and market town. High Island Reservoir was completed in 1978 as Hong Kong’s largest reservoir, with dolos-anchored dams. Tseung Kwan O became a new town in the late 1980s, with rapid population growth from the 1990s. The Hong Kong Geopark’s Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region is partly in this district. Sai Kung was originally a fishing port and market town; the High Island Reservoir, completed in 1978, is Hong Kong's largest. Sheung Yiu and Yim Tin Tsai preserve indigenous Hakka settlements, while the Song inscription at Joss House Bay, the Tin Hau Temple there and Tung Lung Chau Fort — all guarding the sea lanes — attest to maritime trade and coastal defence since the Song dynasty.

The Tseung Kwan O Line serves Hang Hau, Tseung Kwan O, LOHAS Park and Tiu Keng Leng stations. The Tseung Kwan O Tunnel, Po Shun Road and the Cross Bay Link/Tseung Kwan O–Lam Tin Tunnel (2022) connect to Kowloon. Sai Kung Town is served by buses and minibuses to Choi Hung and Tseung Kwan O.
