張奧偉(Sir Oswald Victor Cheung,1922–2003)1922年1月22日在香港出生,父親張裕沛係港上名紳,母親Elizabeth Ellis係伊利士·嘉道理爵士之女。他在拔萃男書院完成中小學,1938至1941年在香港大學修讀數學及化學;二次大戰期間先後遷往澳門及廣州灣,曾協助英軍監視日軍在華南嘅活動,1942年成為英國駐印度聯絡官。1946年香港重光後,他曾短暫代理拔萃男書院校長;1947至1949年獲獎學金入讀英國牛津大學,並在林肯律師學院取得大律師資格,1951年在香港正式執業,1965年成為御用大律師,係香港首位華人御用大律師。他1952年出任香港大律師公會義務秘書,1966年任主席,日後成為不少法律界精英嘅啟蒙老師,有「香港法律界教父」之稱。1970年他獲委任為立法局議員,1974年加入行政局,1978至1981年出任立法局首席非官守議員,接替鍾士元,其後由羅保接任;他留在兩局至1986年。他亦是首位華人出任香港賽馬會主席,並曾任林肯法學協會監事,1987年獲封爵士。2003年9月他在跑馬地住所抽雪茄時被火柴燒着睡衣受傷,植皮手術後因真菌感染併發症,同年12月10日在瑪麗醫院逝世,享年八十一歲。田灣明愛張奧偉國際賓館及張奧偉爵士紀念基金以他命名。

Sir Oswald Victor Cheung (1922–2003) was born in Hong Kong on 22 January 1922, son of the prominent gentleman Cheung U-pui and of Elizabeth Ellis, daughter of Sir Ellis Kadoorie. Educated at Diocesan Boys' School and then at the University of Hong Kong reading mathematics and chemistry from 1938 to 1941, he moved during the Second World War to Macau and Kwangchowan, helped the British military monitor Japanese activity in South China and in 1942 became a British liaison officer in India. Soon after Hong Kong's liberation in 1946 he acted briefly as headmaster of Diocesan Boys' School; he won a scholarship to Oxford in 1947–1949 and was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn, beginning practice in Hong Kong in 1951 and taking silk in 1965 as the colony's first Chinese Queen's Counsel. Honorary secretary of the Hong Kong Bar Association in 1952 and its chairman in 1966, he became the mentor of many of the city's leading lawyers and was known as the 'godfather of the Hong Kong legal profession'. Appointed to the Legislative Council in 1970 and to the Executive Council in 1974, he was Senior Unofficial Member of the Legislative Council from 1978 to 1981, succeeding Sir Sze-yuen Chung and followed by Sir Roger Lobo, and remained in the councils until 1986. He was also the first Chinese chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club and a bencher of Lincoln's Inn, and was knighted in 1987. In September 2003 a match set light to his silk pyjamas while he smoked a cigar at his Happy Valley home; after skin grafts he died of fungal complications at Queen Mary Hospital on 10 December 2003, aged 81. Caritas Oswald Cheung International House in Tin Wan and the Sir Oswald Cheung Memorial Fund are named after him.

在香港取得大律師執業資格,1965年成為首位華人御用大律師;1952年任大律師公會義務秘書,1966年任主席。

Began practice as a barrister in Hong Kong and in 1965 became the colony's first Chinese Queen's Counsel; he was the Bar Association's honorary secretary in 1952 and chairman in 1966.

獲委任立法局議員,1974年加入行政局,長期參與香港法律改革及公共政策制定。

1978

出任立法局首席非官守議員,接替鍾士元爵士,至1981年由羅保爵士接任。

Became Senior Unofficial Member of the Legislative Council, succeeding Sir Sze-yuen Chung, and was followed in 1981 by Sir Roger Lobo.

1987

退任行政局議員後,1987年獲封爵士;他亦曾任林肯法學協會監事及首位華人香港賽馬會主席。

After leaving the Executive Council he was knighted in 1987; he had also been a bencher of Lincoln's Inn and the first Chinese chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

2003

9月在家中抽雪茄時燒傷,12月10日因併發症在瑪麗醫院逝世;田灣明愛張奧偉國際賓館及張奧偉爵士紀念基金以他命名。

Burned while smoking a cigar at home in September, he died of complications at Queen Mary Hospital on 10 December 2003; Caritas Oswald Cheung International House in Tin Wan and the Sir Oswald Cheung Memorial Fund bear his name.

Sir Oswald Cheung was central to the localisation of Hong Kong's legal profession after the war: as the first Chinese Queen's Counsel and a Bar Association chairman, he mentored a generation of leading lawyers including Audrey Eu and Margaret Ng, helping Chinese counsel come to dominate the bar. His years in the Legislative and Executive Councils spanned the beginnings of legal reform and representative government, where his professional voice carried real weight.
