Hong Kong International Airport (located at Chek Lap Kok) recorded a total of 899 hours of low visibility in 2000, rising to a peak of 2,267 hours in 2007, followed by a more significant decline.
On 1 April 2000, the function of the World Meteorological Organization basic surface observation station at the King's Park Meteorological Station was taken over by the Chek Lap Kok Airport Aviation Meteorological Station.
To detect windshear caused by weather systems such as sea breezes and squall lines, the Observatory installed five buoy weather stations in the waters east and west of the airport between 2002 and 2004.
On 20 May 2002, a tornado occurred in eastern Chek Lap Kok between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., with the day's weather mainly affected by a strong southeast monsoon and thunderstorms.
In June 2002, the Hong Kong Observatory installed a lidar at the Airport Air Traffic Control Tower to detect windshear in rain-free clear-sky conditions.
From May 2004, the Observatory introduced a new windshear detection method that integrates data measured by airport runway anemometers with information collected by weather buoys in nearby waters.
Between 2005 and 2007, to compensate for the 7 hectares of woodland lost at Chek Lap Kok, the authorities planted 6 species of mangroves on an 11-hectare abandoned salt pan at Tai O on Lantau Island.
This plantation area was formed by filling abandoned salt pans to compensate for the loss of 7 hectares of mangroves caused by the Chek Lap Kok airport project.
From 2005 onwards, horizontal visibility measurement at Chek Lap Kok Airport no longer relied on visual judgement by meteorological observers, but fully adopted readings automatically generated by Vaisala visibility meters.
The first satellite receiver was installed on 1 September 2008 at the Hong Kong satellite positioning reference stations at Chek Lap Kok, T430 and Quarry Bay.
To tie in with the construction of a nuclear power station in western Guangdong, the Hong Kong Observatory added radiation monitoring stations at Chek Lap Kok and Cape D'Aguilar in 2012.
In 2015, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department included the entire island of Chek Lap Kok in the list of Sites of Special Scientific Interest and conducted regular monitoring there.
On 25 September 2020, Chek Lap Kok Airport was affected by an easterly airstream that converged and combined with the westerlies to form a vortex, which eventually developed into a tornado.
