Article 32 of the Basic Law guarantees freedom of religious belief and protects the property, educational and social-service activities of religious organisations.
Buddhism and Taoism are the mainstream traditional faiths. Po Lin Monastery on Lantau and the Tian Tan Buddha (completed 1993) are celebrated Buddhist sites; Wong Tai Sin Temple (altar established 1921) is among the busiest Taoist temples, with the first-incense custom at Lunar New Year. Chi Lin Nunnery at Diamond Hill is famed for its Tang-style timber architecture.
Protestantism and Catholicism have more than 170 years of history in Hong Kong, with extensive schools, hospitals and social services. The Anglican province, the Catholic Diocese and others run large education and welfare networks. Islam has several mosques serving local and South Asian Muslim communities; Hindu and Sikh temples also serve their congregations.
This site records only religious facilities with official or institutional sources; opening hours and ritual arrangements follow each venue’s own announcements.
