Architecture and the city

Hong Kong architecture runs from traditional to modern: walled villages in the New Territories (such as Kat Hing Wai and Fanling Wai) show rural defensive building; pre-war tong lau on the Island and in Kowloon were the early urban housing form; post-war public housing (from the Shek Kip Mei resettlement blocks) shaped the new towns.
Modern Hong Kong is known for its towers: IFC, Central Plaza, the ICC and others are landmarks. The HSBC headquarters (1985, by Norman Foster) and the Bank of China Tower (1990, by I. M. Pei) are modern classics.
There are 138 declared monuments (as at 30 January 2026, Antiquities and Monuments Office), including temples, walled villages, government buildings and pre-war buildings. The Buildings Department (established 1993) oversees building safety; the Urban Renewal Authority (established 2001) drives urban regeneration.
This site records only buildings and monuments with official sources; reviews of individual private buildings are not included.
