Hong Kong’s cultural ecosystem is supported by government facilities, statutory bodies and civil society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department runs museums and performance venues; the Arts Development Council (statutory since 1995) funds artists; the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority operates M+ (opened 2021) and the Hong Kong Palace Museum (opened 2022).
Cantonese opera was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009 and is the city’s foremost traditional performing art. Hong Kong cinema shaped the Chinese-speaking world in the late twentieth century; the Hong Kong Film Archive (opened 2001) preserves that heritage.
The Hong Kong Museum of Art (founded 1962, moved to its Tsim Sha Tsui home in 1991) was the first public art museum. The Hong Kong Cultural Centre (opened 1989) is the principal performance venue. The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (established by ordinance in 1984) trains performers.
This site records only cultural facilities and institutions with official sources; independent art groups and galleries are not catalogued individually.
