Hong Kong protects historic buildings through two systems. Under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance (1976), the Antiquities Authority may declare a place a monument, giving it statutory protection against alteration. As at 30 January 2026 there were 138 declared monuments, including temples (Man Mo Temple, 1847), walled villages (Sam Tung Uk, 1786), government buildings (the former Supreme Court) and military relics (Lei Yue Mun forts). Beyond monuments, the Historic Building Assessment Scheme grades more than a thousand buildings into Grades 1, 2 and 3. Grading is not statutory protection but is a material planning consideration. The AMO runs three heritage trails: the Central and Western District Trail, the Ping Shan Heritage Trail (1993) and the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail (1999). The Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme (from 2008) leases government-owned historic buildings to non-profit operators: Mei Ho House became a youth hostel, the Old Tai Po Police Station became Green Hub. This site records only monuments and graded buildings with official sources; the conservation status of individual private buildings follows AMO announcements.
