English
Hong Kong has two holiday systems: general holidays (17 named days plus every Sunday) and statutory holidays (15 days, rising stepwise to 17 by 2030). Lunar New Year, Ching Ming, Tuen Ng, Mid-Autumn and Chung Yeung are the main traditional festivals.
The Cheung Chau Bun Festival (bun scrambling and the floating-colours parade) is a distinctive local festival, inscribed on the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2011. The Tai Hang Fire Dragon (around Mid-Autumn) is also nationally listed. Dragon boat races are held at Stanley, Sai Kung and elsewhere at Tuen Ng.
Lantern viewing at Mid-Autumn and hill-climbing at Chung Yeung are family customs. Christmas and Easter are widely celebrated, reflecting the city’s East–West blend.
