沙田是新界東的大型新市鎮，沿城門河及沙田海由大圍伸延至馬鞍山、烏溪沙，佔地約 70 平方公里。區內有慈雲山、獅子山及大老山等山嶺。

Sha Tin is a large new town in the eastern New Territories, stretching along the Shing Mun River and Sha Tin Hoi from Tai Wai to Ma On Shan and Wu Kai Sha, covering about 70 km². The district rises into Beacon Hill, Lion Rock and Tate’s Cairn.

沙田圍及大圍有宋代以降的村落歷史。城門河原是沙田海的一條分支水道，1960 年代填海後形成今日河道。1973 年沙田新市鎮正式發展。香港中文大學（1963 年成立）校園位於馬料水。沙田馬場於 1978 年啟用，是主要賽馬場地。

Sha Tin Wai and Tai Wai retain village histories dating from the Song era. The Shing Mun River is a branch of the former Sha Tin Hoi, formed by reclamation in the 1960s. Sha Tin new town formally began in 1973. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (founded 1963) is at Ma Liu Shui. Sha Tin Racecourse opened in 1978 and is the territory’s main turf track.

The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is a key cultural landmark, while the Che Kung Temple in Tai Wai is a major local religious site with a large following.

港鐵東鐵線經大圍、沙田及馬鞍山；屯馬線連接馬鞍山至大圍，於大圍站與東鐵線交匯。獅子山隧道、大老山隧道及青沙公路連接九龍及港島。城門河沿岸有單車徑。

The East Rail line serves Tai Wai, Sha Tin and Ma On Shan; the Tuen Ma Line links Ma On Shan to Tai Wai, where it connects with the East Rail. Lion Rock Tunnel, Tate’s Cairn Tunnel and the Route 8 bridges link to Kowloon and the island. A cycle path runs along the Shing Mun River.

The Sha Tin town centre revolves around New Town Plaza, the district’s largest retail hub. Fo Tan holds industrial estates with conversions. Hong Kong Science Park, developed from the 1990s, is a key technology R&D base. Ma On Shan and Shek Mun have district commercial centres.
