1955 年在李屋村及鄭屋村附近發現的東漢磚室墓，證明兩千年前已有居民。1953 年 12 月石硤尾木屋區大火，促使政府興建徙置大廈，是香港公共房屋制度的起點。深水埗早年是紡織及製衣工業集中地，長沙灣、荔枝角一帶至今仍有工商大廈。石硤尾邨於1953年大火後落成，為全港首個徙置屋邨、公共房屋發源地；李鄭屋漢墓於1955年發現，為法定古蹟。長沙灣戰後發展為輕工業區，工廈林立；鴨寮街、汝州街等街道經濟（電子零件、布匹批發）自成特色。

The Eastern Han brick tomb found near Li Uk and Cheng Uk villages in 1955 shows settlement here more than 1,800 years ago. The Shek Kip Mei fire of December 1953 destroyed squatter huts and led to the first resettlement blocks — the origin of Hong Kong’s public housing system. Sham Shui Po was an early textile and garment manufacturing centre; Cheung Sha Wan and Lai Chi Kok still hold industrial-commercial buildings. Shek Kip Mei Estate, built after the 1953 fire, was Hong Kong's first resettlement estate and the cradle of public housing; the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb, discovered in 1955, is a declared monument. Cheung Sha Wan grew into a light-industrial district after the war, while street economies such as Apliu Street electronics and the Yu Chau Street fabric trade give the area its distinctive character.

West Kowloon Corridor and West Kowloon Highway link to the island and the New Territories. Lai Chi Kok Road and Cheung Sha Wan Road are the main east-west arteries.
