Do Hong Kong policewomen really carry guns on duty and fire them, as in Armed Reaction?

What really happens

Hong Kong began recruiting policewomen in 1951, but they were given no firearms training and were not armed. A trial programme in the 1990s selected serving female officers for training, producing the first armed policewomen; from 1 January 1995, all newly recruited policewomen must undergo firearms training and carry a gun on duty, so the drama's premise is broadly correct. However, portraying Chan Sam-yuen as the first female officer ever to fire on duty is fiction: no Hong Kong policewoman had fired a shot on duty until 7 November 2018, when a West Kowloon Police Tactical Unit officer shot a knife-wielding man at Sham Shui Po MTR station after warnings failed. Police use of firearms is tightly regulated, and after firing the weapon is submitted for examination and the officer faces investigation.
