The 'Ting Hai effect' — does the Hong Kong stock market really fall every time a drama starring Adam Cheng airs?

What really happens

The 'Ting Hai effect' (also called the 'Chiu Kwan effect') is a folk belief, not a causal market phenomenon. When The Greed of Man first aired in 1992 the Hong Kong market happened to fall; afterwards, whenever a show starring Adam Cheng was broadcast and the market fell, people attributed it to the supposed effect. Financial analysts generally treat any correlation as coincidence. A 2004 CLSA research note discussed the phenomenon but noted that serious institutional investors would not take it seriously, describing it as a self-fulfilling prophecy: some investors sell in panic because they believe the myth, or speculators exploit it to push prices down. Statistics show it does not happen every time, and the market even rose when some of Cheng's dramas premiered. Share prices are really driven by policy, the economy and industry factors, not by an actor's shows.
