The claim

In the drama, a man with mental illness randomly slashes people with a knife in a pedestrian tunnel. Are people with mental illness really so prone to violence?

What really happens

In fact, the vast majority of people with mental illness, including those in recovery, are withdrawn and passive rather than violent towards strangers. Only a small minority have violent tendencies, and such risks are often linked to factors like substance misuse or lack of treatment; it is wrong to equate mental illness with violence. Linking mental illness to random knife attacks deepens public misunderstanding and stigma, discourages sufferers from seeking help, and hinders recovery and community inclusion. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists and the Society for Community Organization (SoCO) issued statements criticising the episode; SoCO demanded a TV apology, asked the Equal Opportunities Commission to examine whether the Disability Discrimination Ordinance was breached, and urged the Communications Authority to follow up under the code of practice on violence. Because mental illness counts as a disability under the DDO, people are protected against discrimination.
