The claim

Was Li Lianying really so loyal and upright, and was An Dehai's death the unjust work of scheming rivals?

What really happens

The Confidant portrays the eunuch Li Lianying as a cautious, loyal and principled man — a portrayal viewers and critics condemned as whitewashing a notorious historical figure. According to CCTV's palace-archives programme, evidence that Li meddled in politics is thin, but his greed is well documented: during the 1900 flight from the Eight-Nation Alliance, he and other palace eunuchs extorted money from officials, and a letter from the Nanjing imperial silk works records Li demanding 120 taels of silver. An Dehai (1844–1869) was seized and beheaded in Jinan by Shandong governor Ding Baozhen in 1869 for leaving the capital without proper authorisation, a breach of strict Qing rules — not the miscarriage of justice the drama depicts. The drama also misplaces the timeline: Li's original name was Li Jinxi, and "Lianying" was a name later bestowed on him by Cixi.
