香港嘅刑事化驗服務由政府化驗所負責。政府化驗所係獨立嘅政府部門，由政府化驗師領導，編制約510人，歷史可追溯至1879年，下設「法證事務部」，為警務處、海關、入境處、廉政公署等執法機構提供化驗同鑑證支援。化驗所人員屬科學／專業職系，負責到案發現場辨證、採證、保存證物、分析數據、重建事發經過，並在法庭作專家證人；佢哋唔係警察，亦無拘捕權。警隊同政府化驗所係兩個唔同部門，早於2000年已簽署合作備忘錄，規範雙方在刑事偵查法證工作上嘅分工同協作。劇中化驗師同警方儼如同一支隊伍、一齊盤問同追兇，屬戲劇化處理。
Forensic analysis in Hong Kong is carried out by the Government Laboratory, a separate government department headed by the Government Chemist with about 510 staff and roots going back to 1879. Its Forensic Science Division supports law-enforcement agencies such as the Police, Customs, Immigration and the ICAC by examining crime scenes, identifying and preserving evidence, analysing data, reconstructing events and giving expert testimony in court. Its officers are scientific and professional-grade civil servants, not police officers, and they have no power of arrest. The Police and the Government Laboratory are two distinct departments; a memorandum of understanding has framed their division of labour in forensic crime investigation since 2000. The drama's portrayal of chemists as part of the same team interrogating and chasing suspects is dramatised.
