On 29 March 1842, Pottinger announced provisional currency measures for Hong Kong, designating Spanish silver dollars, Mexican silver dollars and other silver dollars, East India Company rupees and Chinese copper cash as legally circulating currency, and prescribed the exchange rates between the various currencies.

From 29 March 1974, the title of the District Commissioner, New Territories was changed to Secretary for the New Territories, with the incumbent remaining unchanged as David Akers-Jones; his duties included assisting the Hong Kong Government in planning New Territories-related policies, promoting new town development, protecting the rights of indigenous inhabitants, and overseeing the New Territories District Administration.

On 29 March 1979, Governor MacLehose visited Beijing and was received by Deng Xiaoping. MacLehose pointed out that when the Hong Kong Government granted new New Territories land leases, the maximum term was 1997, only 18 years away at the time.
