On 25 May 1949, all employees of the Mei Ah Silk Weaving Factory launched a strike; previously, the employer had drafted a new employment contract that was opposed by workers over pay and working conditions, and on the 11th of the same month dismissed Lau Chung-ping, chairman of the Kowloon and Hong Kong Silk Industry General Union and workers' representative.
