On 11 August 1840, the British fleet sailed to the Baihe River mouth in Tianjin and presented Lord Palmerston's note to the Qing government, demanding compensation for opium and the cession of islands.

On 11 August 1930, scaffolding workers in Hong Kong launched a strike with three demands: higher pay, abolition of the labour contracting system, and improved food and accommodation; on the 21st of the same month, through the mediation of merchant Li Youquan and Li Yimei, chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the employer's Lianyi Tang and the workers' Tongjing Union reached agreement and signed a settlement, and the workers returned to work.
