On 19 October 1848, Jardine Matheson and Dent & Co., together with several foreign firms in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, jointly funded the formation of the Hong Kong and Canton Steam Packet Company, Hong Kong's first steamship enterprise; the following spring it launched a regular service between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, but ceased operations in 1854.
