On 10 July 1970, the Hong Kong Government promulgated an ordinance providing for a monogamous marriage system from a date appointed by the Governor and registration under another ordinance; Chinese customary marriages could be regarded as valid, with supplementary registration or dissolution available, and the Governor subsequently appointed the ordinance to take effect on 7 October of the following year.
