On 4 January 1843, the British government by Order in Council moved the Criminal and Admiralty Court for China, established in Canton in 1833, to Hong Kong; the court had jurisdiction over Hong Kong Island and a 100-mile zone of the Chinese mainland and coast, hearing criminal cases of British subjects in the area.
