堅尼地（Arthur Edward Kennedy，1810–1883）1872年4月出任港督。任內最嚴峻嘅考驗係1874年9月22日（甲戌年）嘅颱風：風暴正面吹襲香港，逾千艘船隻沉沒或損毀，沿岸房屋被毀，死傷數以千計，係開埠以來最嚴重嘅風災之一；事後政府檢討港口管理、船隻避風安排與建築標準，並着手改善海堤及碼頭設施。他任內亦推動城市向東、西兩端擴展，堅尼地城一帶嘅屠房、煤氣廠等市政設施相繼落成，該區後來以他命名。香港由開埠初期嘅轉口據點逐步長成具規模嘅商埠，市政建設在其任內向西推進。他1877年離任，1883年逝世。

Arthur Edward Kennedy (1810–1883) became Governor in April 1872. On 22 September 1874 a typhoon struck Hong Kong head-on, sinking over a thousand vessels and destroying waterfront buildings; casualties ran into the thousands, making it one of the worst storms since the colony's founding. Afterwards the government reviewed harbour management, shelter for shipping and building standards. He also pushed the city's growth east and west, with the Kennedy Town area and its municipal facilities such as the abattoir and gasworks developed during his tenure; the district bears his name. He left in 1877.
