尤德

尤德（Edward Youde，1924–1986）係外交官出身，曾任英國駐華大使，通曉中文與日文，1982年5月出任港督，正值香港前途問題談判最關鍵嘅階段。他任內中英兩國就香港前途展開多輪談判，1984年12月19日《中英聯合聲明》在北京簽署，確定香港於1997年7月1日回歸中國；他亦處理1983年港元危機後嘅貨幣制度安排，其後香港實行聯繫匯率。1985年立法局首次引入功能組別及選舉團產生嘅議席，議會開始由委任走向選舉。1986年12月5日他訪問北京期間因心臟病發逝世，成為唯一在任內離世嘅港督，總督一職由衛奕信接任。

Edward Youde (1924–1986), a diplomat and former British Ambassador to China who spoke Chinese and Japanese, became Governor in May 1982 at the most critical stage of the negotiations over Hong Kong's future. His tenure saw rounds of Sino-British talks culminating in the Joint Declaration signed in Beijing on 19 December 1984, fixing Hong Kong's return to China on 1 July 1997; he also managed the currency arrangements that followed the 1983 dollar crisis. In 1985 the Legislative Council introduced the first seats returned by functional constituencies and an electoral college, beginning the chamber's shift from appointment to election. On 5 December 1986 he died of a heart attack while visiting Beijing — the only Governor to die in office.
