On 14 June 1841, the Hong Kong government held its first public land auction on Hong Kong Island, covering the area from East Point to Sai Wan, and sold a total of 34 lots.

On 22 March 1842, Pottinger, in his capacity as British Superintendent of Trade in China and Administrator of Hong Kong, issued a proclamation declaring that the land of Hong Kong Island belonged to the British Crown.

In 1852, the Hong Kong government used broken bricks and tiles left after the 1851 fire at Lower Market in Sheung Wan, together with stones from the hillside, to reclaim the area near present-day Jervois Street and Morrison Street, naming the new coastline there Bonham Strand; this project became Hong Kong's first official reclamation.
